Careers In The Coastguard
Established in 1790, the US Coast Guard, often referred to by the acronym USCG, is one of the five branches of America's Armed Forces. Its 42,000 strong workforce works tirelessly to protect the country and provide the best maritime and environmental security possible. The work it carries out is diverse, extensive and substantial, with its results growing increasingly impressive year by year.
In 2012 alone it responded to close to 20,000 Search and Rescue cases as well as carrying out 25,000 container inspections, removing in excess of 100 metric tonnes of cocaine that was headed towards the US border and assisted the conservation of 6,000 fisheries. These are just a small handful of figures, and the rest, the list of which seems never-ending, are no less extraordinary. Its achievements, simply, cannot be overstated.
All of this has cemented the US Coast Guard's status as one of the United States' finest, most respected and most prized institutions. Subsequently, it is also one of the best to work for, with its honorable, first rate employees being held with high regard internationally.
Four of the main positions within the US Coastguard:
1. Intelligence Specialist (IS)
The USCG's role in the countries Homeland Security is becoming more and more pivotal, and with this ever accelerating responsibility has come new job roles and demand for an even higher class workforce. One such role is that of Intelligence Specialist, the ultimate task of whom is to use in depth analysis and first hand intelligence data to assist the protection, and defence of, the US's ports and waterways. It is the job of the Intelligence Specialist to extract, produce, present and maintain intelligence and information, to conduct and present briefings and reports based on this data.
They are expected to have extensive knowledge of computer systems, databases and maps and be able to use and utilize these where required in the context of their work. This multifaceted role requires 14 weeks of training.
2. Boatswain's Mate (BM)
One of the most physically demanding, hands-on roles within the US Coastguard, the tasks and responsibilities of the Boatswain's Mate are incredibly diverse and far ranging, and those employed in the role are expected to be equally flexible, versatile and adaptable, qualities which are only brought further to light and highlighted during their intensive 12 week training to become established master's of the sea.
Possible duties include, though are not limited to: navigation, deck maintenance, search and rescue, boat management, operation of cranes, hoists and winches, supervision and security assistance.
3. Maritime Enforcement Specialist (ME)
Maritime Enforcement Specialists play a huge role in the protection of the countries ports and waterways, and with the assistance of extensive training are highly knowledgeable, exceptionally fit, and strong minded individuals with a passion for law enforcement and general security. As well as being incredibly well versed in the traditional aspects of law and specifically maritime law, of which they come to know inside out, they are also knowledgeable in the fields of anti-terrorism and physical security and have leadership qualities which are put into practice from time to time as they carry out training in their respective fields.
4. Electrician's Mate (EM)
The equipment used within the US Coastguard is unique, complex and pervasive, and as such the electrician's employed to maintain and fix it are remarkable human beings with very high capabilities and the ability to work well under pressure. They are largely responsible for keeping operations running smoothly and are thus expected to be detailed, mathematical and have excellent problem-solving skills.
This role involves perhaps one of the best and most elaborate training schemes within the US Coastguard due to the nature and the level of very specialist technical knowledge required.
